The Scottish wildcat is so deeply engrained in the history of Scotland, but with less than 100 wildcats left in the Scottish wild according to experts, the breed is facing extinction.
All is not lost however. In a quiet location at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland's Highland Wildlife Park in the Cairngorms National Park, a dedicated team are hard at work on a mission to save the Scottish Wildcat.
Special breeding enclosures are being built along with a new veterinary unit, and separate large pre-release enclosures where the cats will see no humans (but will be monitored by cameras), to simulate the wild.
In the summer of 2023, the first Wildcats will be released and history will be made.
